M6 vs Cambridge Nomads 3

Goalscorers : Will Earl, Nigel Gadsby

Player of the Match : Nigel Anns

The recent formation of Cambridge Hockey Club from predominantly disenchanted City players has precedent. Cambridge Nomads was formed in the early 1950s in perhaps a more bitter atmosphere. Read more about it here

Time has certainly softened the rancour as the two sides met for the reverse fixture of a fiercely contested 1-0 victory for the men in red. This time it was honours even in a well contested and healthily competitive game.

City started without their bed blocking health tourist and welcomed our very own Al Murray aka Kevin Tonry (not Turvey) who brought his own brand of playing style to the pitch. Rod is back home now and it may be that Ben is already thinking wistfully about those meals without being told how to dribble. We all wish you a speedy recovery!

At this juncture it's probably a good time to thank Geoff and Clive for offering to travel to Peterborough to help out the Vets. Any Vets reading this will hopefully have created some space in their busy diaries to play some hockey between now and the end of the season.

We were 1-0 up at half time following a well taken Will Earl goal following a fabulous aerial into the D from Nigel Anns. After a brief rousing chat from Old Skip there was...silence. Rod was trying to break out of Addenbrookes, Stuart was skiing and Skip was elsewhere. It was quite nice actually.

The Nigels combined well when another assist from Anns to Gadsby saw the ball rocket into the top corner (or "top bins" as some of our younger players might say). 2-0 and City should have closed the game out. Nomads weren't going to roll over however and kept pressing. They won a penalty corner which was well taken and continued to attack. When the ball did break up the pitch the younger forwards seemed to ignore the pleas not to try and dribble round the guy with the beard and Nomads attacked again. Eventually they scored a deserved equaliser following a good move down their right.

Normally this would have been more than fine but this is not a normal season and we now start to prepare for the tricky trip to Ely.
