Cambridge City Men’s 1s vs University of Birmingham Men’s 1s

Sunday 12th March 2023

Men’s Division 1 North

Umpires: Jaime Cox & Chris Duerden; Match Official: Yvonne McCartney

Ladies and gentlemen, boys and girls, welcome one and all to The Olympic Dave Arena!

Last weekend our men hosted Bowdon in a frustrating loss where we created enough chances to draw or even win, but could not seal the deal. Thank you though to Rob Lewis who kindly stepped in at the start as an umpire to ensure we could play. Rob is a true hockey man who does all he can to support development of the game in Cambridge and the East in general. We hope the recovery from the resulting injury goes well and you are back on pitch soon!

Congratulations to the women’s 5s who won their league last week. I have to say it is inspirational to watch the likes of Monkey, Becky and Right Steph return to the game and absolutely dominate it! Alongside them are a lot of young players with great potential, all led by Laurel who does a great job of balancing admin, on pitch leadership and off pitch mischief!

Our umpires and match officials this weekend are Chris Duerben and Jaime Cox, Yvonne McCartney returns as Match Official to run the sideline for us. Thank you to all three who are taking the time to ensure we can play.

Lastly I want to take the opportunity to highlight the great work done by CCHC Old Girl Tess Howard. England Hockey have announced a more inclusive set of league regulations, ensuring that girls and women in particular are able to enjoy our game more. As Australia can confirm Tess makes an impact in front of goal, but her impact off the pitch is just as impressive. Tess was the driving force behind these changes. It is due to her lobbying that now shorts, skirts and skorts are accepted - as well as not needing matching base layers below National League. It is easy to simply focus on being a top athlete once you break into the senior squad. Not only does Tess achieve that but she uses her platform as an elite athlete for positive change. A big well done from all of us at CCHC Tess!

I hope that you enjoy the game today and thank you for all joining us.

Best wishes,

Simon Webb

Men’s 1st XI Manager
