W3 vs Watton 1

W3 vs Watton 1

Buddy the puppy was again our most enthusiastic supporter, the sky was still blue, and Baz was there in spirit, if not in person.

City lined up with a largely unchanged team from last week’s win against Norwich. We welcomed back Chanre after her medal winning exploits at the Masters World Cup 🥈

Despite a strong start, it was all a bit nervy in the first 10 minutes of the match as a dominant City failed to convert a number of opportunities, until Millie latched onto a good through ball to score with a neat reverse into the corner. What followed was a blizzard of goals. Millie completed a quickfire hat-trick in the space of 5 minutes or so, to make it 3-0. In no particular order, Barks scored with a trade mark cheeky left post finish from our second short corner, Emily saw her cross-shot turned in by an unlucky scrambling Watton defender, Hannah met an Anita cross at the post, Chanre cracked one at rocket pace and Ella popped up to make it (we think) 8-0 at half time.

In the second half, the City defence and midfield were relentless, strangling any Watton attacks, and winning back the ball high up the pitch, to keep the goals flowing. Naomi, playing despite illness 👏, was untroubled in goal, Becki may have been spotted in the Watton D. Chanre & Barks fired in second half hat-tricks, and Millie nipped in with another to leave 3 City players on 4 goals, which a quick google suggests can be variously described as a ‘haul’, a Texas hat-trick’, or just plain greedy!

A tough result for Watton, but with league leaders Ipswich having had some big results, it was important for City’s goal difference to keep the pressure on until the end. Despite the score, a really big shout out to the Watton GK today when their regular GK had to pull out last minute due to illness. It was obviously a tough match to pull on the pads for the first time, but she made some great saves, including one screamer from Chanre that looked set to break the back net. Next week Cambridge South.
