Lee Valley Hockey and Tennis Centre was the venue for the U14 Girls National Finals.
Drawn in Pool A, Cambridge City started their day slowly with a draw, Olivia Clegg scoring a last minute equaliser to deny City of York a win having taken the lead in the first minute of the game. Cambridge City then played Old Loughtonians knowing that a better start would be imperative, goals by Laura Hill and Olivia Clegg in the first half settled the nerves and carried them through to victory. This win set up a great Pool A finale against Yeovil & Sherborne with both team on six points with Cambridge City knowing that only a win would see them through to the final. The game got off to a flyer with an inspired Olivia Clegg putting away four goals in the first fifteen minutes to give a 4-1 lead at half time. Yeovil pressed forward in the second half and were caught on the break resulting in a fifth goal scored by Helena Russell to secure top place in pool A.
Into the final match of the day “The National Finals” a very strong Surbiton side who had not conceded a goal all day thwarted Cambridge City’s attacking flair preventing the ball reaching our fast dangerous attacking forwards. Two early goals in the first half followed by a third in the second half sealed victory for the talented Surbiton team. To secure silver for our young side, ten of which will be in the same age group next season is a fantastic achievement. Special mention to coaches Phil Clegg and Julian Barker on another first for Cambridge City Junior Hockey Club.
